Weekend Update!

The censure of Rep. Doug Bruce, while possibly the week’s most colorful event, was certainly not the most important. Here are other key developments that merit an update:

  • On Monday morning, we in House District 3 had our first “coffee chat” of the session at Kaladi’s near DU. I was delighted to spend some time with you and hear about the issues that are on your mind. We will have several of these informal get-togethers this session. The next one will take place in Englewood, at a date, time and venue to be determined. Stay tuned!

This morning we considered House Resolution 1005 on the censure of Rep. Doug Bruce. The Resolution was read in its entirety, detailing the Jan. 14 incident in which Rep. Bruce kicked a photographer. Welcome to Colorado Senate District 27

September 2010

Dear Friends,

Welcome to my state senate website and thank you for visiting. It’s an honor to represent the 27th district in the Colorado General Assembly – a district that includes portions of Arapahoe County from Deer Trail on the east through Greenwood Village on the west. The 2010 legislative session just finished marked the second year of my second four-year term serving in the state senate. In November 2008, I was elected to serve a second term as a state senator. My senate colleagues elected me to serve as the Minority Caucus Whip.

Ukraine Election Monitoring - Election Day

Lviv Monday 1:45 am

We are watching a vote count - a very slow process tonight.

Saturday seems like forever ago. It was bright clear weather – less humid than Friday. We started first thing Saturday morning with appointments with the various parties and players to discuss concerns they might have about the election, things we should be aware of in the region, and so forth.

Ukraine Election Monitoring - Day 4

After more briefing in Kyiv Friday morning, my colleague and I headed to the airport to fly to Lviv. For a capitol airport, the Kyiv airport is remarkably small - essentially a commuter terminal. We found ourselves flying on a YAK 42, a Russian built aircraft - not something I was too thrilled about!

Ukraine Election Monitoring - Day 3

Today was the second long day of briefings we had on the pre-election environment in the Ukraine. We met with representatives of four of the parties in this election, including the big three: Julia Tymoshenko's Block - you've probably seen photos of her with her famous blond braids; Our Ukraine - the president's party; and Party of Regions - the Prime Minister's party.

Election Monitoring in Ukraine - Blog Post 1

Kyiv, Ukraine (September 25, 2007) - I arrived in Kyiv on Tuesday afternoon, 9 hours ahead of Denver on the time clock.

Driving in from the airport, I was struck by the driving. Ukrainians make lanes where they need them -- it doesn't matter if the road has three lanes. Our driver made his own way creating four lanes, by driving between 2 lanes. Then, I noticed that other cars were doing the same -- at one point where traffic was backed up, cars just drove down the wide sidewalk in the middle of the street! Cars are everywhere and Kyiv had no planning to accommodate them. One Ukrainian friend said that until recently, most Ukrainians couldn't afford cars and most families did not have a car, so this was never a problem. But, that is clearly not the case today -- cars are everywhere in Kyiv, and parked everywhere -- pulled up on the side of the road and parked every which ways on the wide sidewalks.
